The ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2K pseudogene is a non-functional DNA segment with high sequence homology to the functional UBE2K gene, which encodes an enzyme involved in protein ubiquitination. Pseudogenes generally result from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and typically accumulate mutations rendering them unable to produce functional proteins. While most pseudogenes do not serve therapeutic or biomarker roles, some can be transcribed into non-coding RNA with potential regulatory effects, but there is no evidence that this particular pseudogene (ENSG00000276563) has any functional relevance or therapeutic potential. These sequences can complicate genetic studies due to their similarity to protein-coding genes. The canonical, protein-coding version relevant to disease and drug interactions is UBE2K, not its pseudogene copy.
