Overview

Ubiquitin domain-containing protein 2 (UBTD2), also known as dendritic cell-derived ubiquitin-like protein (DC-UbP), is a ubiquitin superfamily member characterized by the presence of a ubiquitin-like (UbL) domain and a ubiquitin-binding domain (UBD). UBTD2 is primarily involved in the regulation of protein ubiquitination by acting as a molecular scaffold that binds and coordinates the activity of the ubiquitin-activating enzyme E1 (UbE1/UBA1) and the deubiquitinating enzyme USP5, thereby modulating the cellular ubiquitin pool and homeostasis of protein ubiquitination and deubiquitination. UBTD2 was first identified in dendritic cells and is broadly expressed in human tissues. Although it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target and no specific drugs are known to interact with it, emerging evidence suggests that altered UBTD2 function could impact cellular processes such as protein degradation, gene regulation, and possibly tumorigenesis via fusion with other proteins. The precise biologic and disease relevance of UBTD2 remains under investigation.
