Overview

Ubiquitin-like protein 4A (UBL4A) is a ubiquitin-like protein that acts as part of the cytosolic BAG6/BAT3 complex, which is essential for maintaining the solubility and proper handling of misfolded, hydrophobic, or mislocalized proteins in the cytosol[1][3][4][9]. UBL4A participates in the post-translational delivery of tail-anchored or type II transmembrane proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum; when delivery fails, these proteins are ubiquitinated and sorted for degradation by the proteasome[3][4][9]. The BAG6/BAT3 complex helps ensure quality control for secretory and membrane proteins, including endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD)[3][4][9]. UBL4A is widely expressed in human tissues[6], but it is not a typical drug target, nor does it serve as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter in current therapeutic paradigms. Its primary molecular function is protein folding and quality control, rather than signal transduction or cellular response as seen in classical therapeutic targets.
