Ubiquitin-like protein 5 (UBL5) is a small, highly conserved member of the ubiquitin-like protein family. Unlike classical ubiquitin, which tags proteins for degradation via the proteasome, UBL5 and other ubiquitin-like proteins are primarily involved in reversible modulation of protein function rather than targeting them for destruction. UBL5 plays a critical role in pre-mRNA splicing, chromosome segregation, DNA repair, and stress response. It associates non-covalently with spliceosomal proteins. Alterations in UBL5 levels or function have been linked to defects in DNA repair mechanisms and increased susceptibility to apoptosis under ER stress, suggesting potential roles in cancer biology, neurodegeneration, and diseases involving defective RNA processing or genome instability.
