The "ubiquitin specific peptidase 35 pseudogene" is a genomic locus that resembles the USP35 gene but is classified as a *pseudogene*—a DNA sequence derived from the parental functional deubiquitinating enzyme gene but harboring disabling mutations that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. Pseudogenes commonly arise by gene duplication or retrotransposition events, followed by sequence changes that abrogate protein-coding capacity. While some pseudogenes can have regulatory effects (such as acting as RNA decoys), there is no current evidence that this particular pseudogene has such a role[4][6]. Its parent gene, USP35, is a member of the ubiquitin-specific protease family implicated in protein regulation by deubiquitination, but those functions are not retained by its pseudogene copy[1][3][7].
