It is related by sequence homology to USP9Y, a gene encoding a functional deubiquitinating enzyme required for male germ cell development. As a pseudogene, USP9YP23 does not encode an active protein and does not participate in established biological, disease, or pharmacological pathways. There are no known interacting drugs or clinical uses for USP9YP23; the entry may be mistakenly referenced when information about USP9Y is sought. USP9YP23 should not be confused with the protein-coding USP9Y gene. If a therapeutic or biological target is intended, USP9Y (not the pseudogene USP9YP23) is the correct gene, associated with deubiquitinase activity and male germ cell stability. The pseudogene has no established biological, pathological, or pharmacologic significance.
