Ubiquitin specific protease 6 pseudogene (null)

Ubiquitin specific protease 6 pseudogene is a non-protein-coding segment of DNA with high sequence similarity to the functional USP6 gene but lacks the capacity to encode a functional protein. Pseudogenes like this may arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and usually accumulate disabling mutations such as premature stop codons or frame shifts. Unlike the functional USP6, which encodes a deubiquitinating enzyme involved in protein homeostasis and cellular signaling, the pseudogene has no known biological, therapeutic, or diagnostic role. Its only significance may lie in complicating genetic studies due to sequence similarity with functional genes.
