Overview

UCKL1 antisense RNA 1 (UCKL1-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 20q13.33. It is transcribed antisense to the uridine-cytidine kinase 1-like 1 (UCKL1) gene and thought to function in the regulation of UCKL1 gene expression, possibly through cis-acting antisense RNA mechanisms. It is annotated as a non-protein coding RNA in major databases. Although direct biological functions and disease associations for UCKL1-AS1 are not yet well characterized, the broader class of antisense lncRNAs is known to play roles in RNA-based regulatory networks, including control of sense gene translation and stability. There are currently no drugs targeting UCKL1-AS1, nor is it used as a clinical biomarker, but research into antisense RNA-mediated regulation suggests potential future applications in RNA therapeutics. The SINEUPs class (to which the Uchl1 antisense lncRNA in mouse belongs) has shown the ability for antisense lncRNAs to up-regulate translation of overlapping sense genes, but this function is established primarily in other loci, notably UCHL1. There is no direct evidence so far that UCKL1-AS1 itself acts as a SINEUP in human pathology or therapy. Expression of UCKL1-AS1 is mainly tissue-specific and it is part of the rapidly expanding universe of annotated lncRNAs.
