UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 2B15 (UGT2B15) is an enzyme primarily responsible for the glucuronidation of a wide range of endogenous and exogenous compounds, including steroid hormones (such as testosterone and estradiol), many drugs, and various environmental xenobiotics. By conjugating lipophilic substrates with glucuronic acid, UGT2B15 transforms them into more water-soluble metabolites, aiding in their elimination via urine or bile. UGT2B15 plays a key role in drug detoxification, hormone homeostasis, and protection against toxic exposures, and genetic variants in this enzyme contribute to interindividual differences in drug efficacy and safety. Alterations in UGT2B15 expression or function have been implicated in diseases such as cancer (breast, prostate), mood disorders, and others where steroid metabolism is relevant.
