Overview

UDP-sugar transporter protein SLC35A5 is a member of the solute carrier family 35 subfamily A and encodes a probable nucleoside-sugar transporter that localizes to the Golgi apparatus and endoplasmic reticulum[1][2][8]. It functions as a transmembrane antiporter involved in transporting UDP-alpha-D-glucuronate (UDP-GlcA), UDP-N-acetyl-alpha-D-glucosamine (UDP-GlcNAc), and UDP-N-acetyl-alpha-D-galactosamine (UDP-GalNAc) from the cytosol into the lumen of the Golgi by exchanging them for UMP[2][3][8]. These activities are essential for proper glycosylation of proteins and lipids, a fundamental biochemical process across many tissues[1][3]. Mutations or dysfunction in SLC35A5 are associated with congenital disorders of glycosylation and some neurodevelopmental conditions[3]. There are no known drugs directly targeting SLC35A5, and it is primarily studied as a transporter relevant to glycosylation metabolism.
