Overview

UGDH antisense RNA 1 (UGDH-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located on chromosome 4 that is transcribed antisense to the protein-coding gene UDP-glucose 6-dehydrogenase (UGDH). It does not code for a protein product. Instead, UGDH-AS1 is implicated in regulation of gene expression, primarily through RNA-based regulatory mechanisms. UGDH-AS1 is reported to participate in competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) networks, notably regulating the activity of microRNAs such as hsa-miR-140, and may influence the expression of genes like FOXF1 and PKD1. Evidence connects UGDH-AS1 to intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), possibly by affecting extracellular matrix-related gene networks and thus impacting tissue integrity. While UGDH-AS1 itself is not a well-established therapeutic target, it is studied primarily as a molecular marker or regulatory element in non-coding RNA research. Note: There is no evidence that UGDH-AS1 is a protein, enzyme, receptor, or traditional "therapeutic target." It is classified as a non-coding RNA and its functional study is at an early stage, primarily limited to gene regulatory networks and association studies rather than direct pharmacological targeting.
