Overview

The ultra rapid delayed rectifier potassium current (IKur) is a specific type of voltage-gated potassium current found predominantly in atrial myocytes of the heart. It is primarily mediated by the Kv1.5 channel (encoded by the KCNA5 gene). IKur contributes to phase 1 and early phase 3 repolarization of the atrial action potential, which helps sets the refractory period and overall excitability of atrial cells. IKur's presence leads to a more triangular-shaped action potential waveform and shorter duration of action potentials in atria compared to ventricles. Selective blockade has been proposed as an antiarrhythmic strategy that targets only atria, potentially reducing pro-arrhythmic risk for ventricles.
