Overview

Ultrasonic imaging, also known as medical ultrasound or sonography, is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses high-frequency sound waves (typically 1–30 MHz) generated by a transducer (probe) to visualize internal body structures such as organs, tissues, and blood vessels. The probe emits pulses of ultrasound, which reflect off tissues and different anatomical interfaces according to their acoustic properties. The returning echoes are captured by the probe and converted into visual images (such as B-mode, M-mode, or Doppler images) on a monitor. The technique is widely used for real-time imaging of dynamic anatomy, guides interventional procedures, and supports diagnosis across many medical specialties due to its safety, cost-effectiveness, and lack of ionizing radiation.

Safety considerations

Ultrasound is generally considered extremely safe and does not use ionizing radiationMinor concerns include potential tissue heating or cavitation at very high intensities (these are rare and not a therapeutic challenge in diagnostic use)
