Overview

Ultrasound backscattering refers to the phenomenon where incident ultrasound waves are reflected (or 'scattered' back) from tissues, microbubbles, bone, or other internal structures and received by an ultrasound probe for analysis or imaging. The pattern and strength of this backscattering depend on the composition, density, and structure of the tissue, and are used to generate diagnostic images, characterize tissues (e.g., measure bone density), and evaluate pathological changes. Quantitative ultrasound backscatter can analyze tissue microstructure and is important in medical ultrasound, but it is not itself a druggable biological target, receptor, enzyme, or molecule[1][2][3][5][7].
