Ultrasound enhancing agents (UEAs), also known as ultrasound contrast agents, are substances used to improve the quality and diagnostic value of ultrasound imaging. The most common type is a microbubble-based contrast agent, which consists of gas-filled microbubbles stabilized by a shell. They enhance backscatter on sonograms, improving visualization of blood flow, organ perfusion, and vascular structures. Targeted versions can be used for molecular imaging.
Acoustic impedance mismatch between gas-filled microbubbles and tissue enhances backscatter signal. Circulation through bloodstream and reflection of ultrasound waves much more strongly than soft tissue or blood alone. Targeted versions can bind specific molecular markers, allowing for molecular imaging.
