Ultrasound imaging enhancement via acoustic impedance mismatch refers to the deliberate use or engineering of differences in acoustic impedance between materials or tissues to improve image contrast and quality in ultrasound diagnostics. Acoustic impedance (Z) is a property of a material defined as the product of its density and the speed of sound within it. When an ultrasound wave encounters an interface between two materials with different impedances, part of the wave is reflected back, creating echoes that are detected by the transducer and used to form images.
