Ultrasound signal reflectance refers to the proportion of an ultrasound wave that is reflected at the interface between two media (e.g., different tissues) based on differences in their acoustic impedance (product of tissue density and sound velocity)[1][2][4]. Strong reflection happens when there is a large difference in acoustic impedance (such as between soft tissue and bone or air), creating echoes that are detected by the ultrasound transducer and used to construct images. The amount and direction of reflected signal depends on the incident angle and impedance mismatch. Reflection is integral to ultrasound-based medical imaging, enabling visualization of anatomical boundaries but can also result in artifacts if non-ideal reflections occur[1][2][3][4]. Ultrasound reflectance is not a receptor, enzyme, or molecule, but a physical interaction between energy and tissue. This entry does not describe a singular molecular entity or target, but rather a physical measurement readout or property in diagnostic imaging. It cannot be used as a structured therapeutic target or classified within molecular families.
