Ultraviolet B Light Exposure (NB-UVB)

Target
NB-UVB
Molecular classification
Electromagnetic radiation, Physical agent
01

Overview

Ultraviolet B (UVB) light exposure, particularly narrowband UVB (NB-UVB), is a form of electromagnetic radiation used therapeutically. It primarily affects the epidermis, leading to DNA damage, trans-urocanic acid isomerization, and cell membrane alterations. NB-UVB induces immunosuppression by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibiting antigen presentation. It stimulates vitamin D production. Overexposure carries risks of sunburn, increased skin cancer risk, and premature aging, but therapeutic protocols are designed to minimize these risks. It is used to treat psoriasis, vitiligo and atopic dermatitis.
