Ultraviolet photons are quantum packets of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between 100 and 400 nanometers (encompassing UVA, UVB, and UVC bands). In biology, they are best known for their ability to cause DNA damage (e.g., formation of pyrimidine dimers) and other cellular disturbances through both direct absorption by key molecules (DNA, proteins) and indirect effects (generation of reactive oxygen species). While excessive UV exposure is associated with increased risk of skin cancer, photoaging, immunosuppression, and ocular damage, some controlled UVB exposure is critical for endogenous vitamin D synthesis. Ultraviolet photons are not considered drug targets in the classical sense, but are important environmental factors and mediators of biological responses[3][4][5][6].
