Unc-51 like kinase 4 (ULK4)

Target
ULK4
Molecular classification
Enzyme: ULK4 is a kinase, Serine/threonine protein kinase
01

Overview

Unc-51 like kinase 4 (ULK4) is a human protein encoded by the ULK4 gene and belongs to the ULK family of serine/threonine kinases. While ULK1 and ULK2 are well characterized for their roles in autophagy, ULK4's biological function is less understood but may include involvement in neuronal development and regulation of neural signaling pathways. ULK4 is not currently known to be pharmacologically targeted by any approved or investigational drugs, and its mechanism of action in disease is not well delineated from current literature. Emerging genetic evidence suggests a potential role in neurologic and psychiatric conditions, though more research is required for definitive clinical associations.

02

Mechanism of action

Not established for ULK4; other ULK kinases participate in autophagy regulation, but comparable pharmaceutical mechanisms for ULK4 are not described in the current literature. General mechanism for inhibitors of kinases would be inhibition of phosphorylation activity, but no ULK4-specific inhibitors are cited.

03

Biological functions

May play roles in neuronal development and signaling pathways related to the extended reward system.Biochemical characterization is incomplete, but as a kinase, potential functions include signal transduction and possibly roles in autophagy, although specific functions for ULK4 (different from ULK1/ULK2) are not fully elucidated from the available results.Possible regulation of cell signaling networks, particularly in the central nervous system.
04

Disease associations

Genetic association studies suggest possible roles in neurological disorders and cognitive function.May be implicated in psychiatric diseases via effects on neural systems, although this evidence is emerging and not definitive.
