Uncharacterized targets

The term "Uncharacterized targets" refers to proteins, receptors, enzymes, or other biological entities for which functional, structural, and therapeutic characterization is incomplete or lacking. These entries are frequent in genomic and proteomic databases and are flagged because their sequences or structural features are recognized, but biological roles, disease associations, or pharmacological interactions remain unresolved. Functional annotation projects use bioinformatics, homology modeling, and experimental approaches to redefine many of these as specific enzymes, receptors, or other entities over time, transitioning them from "uncharacterized" to a classified molecular target[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. This label should be replaced, whenever possible, by the fully annotated, specific molecular name and function that emerges from ongoing research and bioinformatic annotation.
