Uncharacterized viral and host protein

This category encompasses all viral and host proteins for which roles in virus-host interactions are suspected but whose molecular identity, structure, or function have not yet been defined. These proteins emerge frequently in studies that use high-throughput methods (e.g., mass spectrometry, interactomics, proteomics) but fail to match entries with well-established functional or structural annotations[5][8]. The grouping is necessary in research to allow the discovery and further characterization of these proteins, but it cannot be used as a therapeutic target or functional biomarker without additional information. Numerous databases attempt to capture host-pathogen protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and viral protein families, but many entries remain labeled "uncharacterized" until sufficient functional or structural data are published[2][5][6]. This term should NOT be used as a canonical drug target or molecular entity in structured therapeutic databases, due to lack of specificity and the fact that it represents potentially thousands of unrelated molecules with diverse biological roles[8][6]. To enable therapeutic development or biomarker usage, proteins must be individually annotated with molecular class, function, disease connections, and validated interactors.
