Overview

Unconventional myosin-Id (**MYO1D**) is a class I myosin motor protein that binds to actin filaments and utilizes ATP hydrolysis to generate movement along the actin cytoskeleton. MYO1D is expressed in multiple tissues, with important roles in **cellular membrane trafficking** and the regulation of **myelin formation and maintenance** in the central nervous system, particularly in oligodendrocytes. It is also a key determinant of **biological chirality** (left-right asymmetry) at cellular and organismal levels, with evidence from model organisms showing that MYO1D can induce dextral (right-sided) twisting, affecting the anatomical and behavioral asymmetry of developing tissues and organs. Although MYO1D is involved in fundamental processes such as cytoskeletal organization and developmental asymmetry, it is not currently classified as a direct therapeutic target, and no drugs are known to specifically modulate its function.
