Uncoupling Protein 2 (UCP2)

Target
UCP2
Molecular classification
Mitochondrial Anion Carrier Protein (MACP), Uncoupling Protein, Transporter
01

Overview

Uncoupling Protein 2 (UCP2) is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that belongs to the uncoupling protein family. It facilitates the regulated discharge of protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane, uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. UCP2 primarily functions to regulate mitochondria-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS), protecting cells from oxidative stress. Alterations in UCP2 expression or function have been linked to cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases.
