Unique cartilage matrix-associated protein (UCMA) is a small, secreted, highly charged, cartilage-specific protein, predominantly found in the upper zone of fetal and juvenile epiphyseal cartilage. It is processed into active fragments, is vitamin K-dependent for post-translational gamma-carboxylation, and plays a role in maintaining cartilage homeostasis by suppressing osteogenic differentiation at the cartilage-bone interface. UCMA is used as a chondrocyte differentiation marker and has implications as a biomarker in osteoarthritis and cartilage-related pathologies. It is not considered a canonical therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
