Overview

The upper intercostal nerves are the anterior rami of the first six thoracic spinal nerves (T1-T6), which travel along the costal grooves of the ribs to provide motor and sensory innervation to the thoracic wall [StatPearls]. These nerves are responsible for the contraction of the intercostal muscles, which are vital for the mechanics of respiration, and they transmit sensory information from the skin of the chest and the parietal pleura [NYSORA]. While not a molecular target in the traditional sense, the upper intercostal nerves are a primary anatomical site for regional anesthesia and pain management interventions [PubMed].
