Upregulator of cell proliferation (URGCP, also known as URG4) is a protein-coding gene first identified as upregulated in response to hepatitis B virus X antigen and implicated in the development and progression of several cancers, notably hepatocellular carcinoma and gastric cancer. URGCP promotes cell cycle progression (likely through upregulation of cyclin D1), enhances cell proliferation, and increases the angiogenic capacity of tumor cells by activating the NF-κB pathway and upregulating pro-angiogenic genes such as VEGFC, TNFα, IL-6, IL-8, and MYC. Its overexpression is associated with poor prognosis in several malignancies, and it is considered a potential oncogene and therapeutic target in these contexts. No clinically approved drugs specifically target URGCP, but its molecular pathway relationships suggest it as a candidate for anti-cancer interventions aimed at reducing tumor growth and angiogenesis.
