UBP1
Molecular classification
Transcription factor

Overview

Upstream binding protein 1 (UBP1) is a member of the TFCP2/Grainyhead family of transcription factors, also known as LBP-1a. UBP1 functions as a nuclear DNA-binding transcriptional activator or repressor depending on promoter context and regulates transcription of several genes, including CYP11A1 (involved in steroid biosynthesis) and the alpha-globin gene in erythroid cells. It plays roles in modulating cholesterol and steroid metabolism, regulating placental gene expression, and repressing HIV-1 transcription. Genetic studies associate the UBP1 locus with blood pressure regulation. UBP1 is implicated in cancer biology, but its precise mechanistic impact on oncogenesis is still emerging. It operates in a network with related transcription factors and may regulate gene expression through dimerization and interaction with other LBP proteins[1][3].
