Uracil-DNA glycosylase pseudogene

Molecular classification
Other, Pseudogene
01

Overview

The uracil-DNA glycosylase pseudogene is a segment of DNA located in the human genome that shares high sequence similarity with the functional uracil-DNA glycosylase gene but has accumulated mutations and does not code for a functional protein. It is one of several non-functional copies ("pseudogenes") homologous to the uracil-DNA glycosylase gene, and it cannot participate in excision repair or base-excision DNA repair, unlike the active enzyme. Pseudogenes such as this are generally remnants of evolutionarily duplicated genes that have lost their protein-coding ability. There is no evidence of this pseudogene being a therapeutic target, relevant biomarker, or druggable entity. This information reflects the status and understanding of pseudogenes such as LOC100130177/ENSG00000254047. If you are seeking therapeutic targets, their functional counterparts (e.g., the actual uracil-DNA glycosylase enzyme, "UNG") should be considered instead.
