Uric Acid (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Small Molecule, Purine Metabolite, Endogenous Metabolite
01

Overview

Uric acid is the final product of purine metabolism in humans. Elevated levels in the blood (hyperuricemia) can lead to gout and kidney stones, while low levels have been linked to neurological disorders. It acts as an antioxidant at lower concentrations but exhibits pro-inflammatory effects at higher concentrations.

Other names
Urate7,9-Dihydro-1H-purine-2,6,8(3H)-trione2,6,8-Trioxopurine
02

Mechanism of action

Uric acid itself is not directly targeted by drugs. Interacting drugs target the enzyme xanthine oxidase (e.g., allopurinol, febuxostat) to reduce uric acid production or promote its excretion (e.g., probenecid, lesinurad). Pegloticase converts uric acid to allantoin.
