Overview

Urea is the primary nitrogenous waste product from protein metabolism in mammals, synthesized in the liver via the urea cycle for ammonia detoxification. It is also widely used as a nitrogen-rich fertilizer and in industrial applications, including the production of plastics and pharmaceuticals. Its ability to disrupt hydrogen bonds makes it useful in protein denaturation studies. Elevated levels in the blood (uremia) are indicative of kidney dysfunction.
