Overview

Urea transporter 1 (SLC14A1, UT-B) is a member of the solute carrier family primarily responsible for rapid, passive, and bidirectional urea transport across cell membranes in tissues such as erythrocytes, kidney, colon, heart, and brain[1][3][6]. It has a structural topology characterized by 10 transmembrane domains and forms trimers in membranes[5]. SLC14A1 is vital for concentrating urine in the kidney and for efficient urea nitrogen salvaging, and also expresses the Kidd blood group antigen, which is significant in transfusion medicine[6]. Variations in this gene or its expression have implications for renal physiology, transfusion compatibility, and are increasingly studied in cancer—especially prostate and bladder[4]. The principal mechanism of regulation includes gene promoter methylation, phosphorylation, and inhibition by specific mercurial and synthetic compounds[1][2][4][5]. No major approved drugs directly target SLC14A1, but it is an emerging target for novel diuretics and disease modulation[5].
