Overview

Urease subunit alpha is the large catalytic component of the urease enzyme complex, which catalyzes the hydrolysis of urea into ammonia and carbon dioxide. This reaction is crucial in nitrogen metabolism for many organisms, including bacteria, plants, and fungi. In pathogenic bacteria such as *H. pylori*, it neutralizes gastric acid by producing ammonia from host-derived urea—an essential adaptation for survival in acidic environments like the stomach mucosa.
