The ureter is a muscular tube, approximately 25–30 cm long in adults, responsible for conveying urine from each kidney to the urinary bladder. Its wall comprises three main tissue layers: an inner mucosal layer lined by transitional (urothelial) epithelium, a muscular layer with inner longitudinal and outer circular smooth muscle fibers (and a third longitudinal layer distally), and an outer connective tissue adventitia. The primary function of the ureter is the unidirectional transport of urine via waves of peristalsis initiated by pacemaker cells near the renal pelvis.
