Urethral tissue refers to the multi-layered anatomical canal that serves to transport urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body. It is composed of an internal mucosal layer (urothelium), a submucosa containing a rich vascular plexus, and an outer muscularis layer consisting of smooth and skeletal muscle fibers (StatPearls: Anatomy, Abdomen and Pelvis, Urethra). In the male anatomy, the urethra is longer and also functions as the terminal portion of the reproductive tract for the passage of semen (NIH: The Urinary Tract & How It Works). While various drugs are used to modulate urethral function—such as alpha-1 adrenergic antagonists to reduce outlet resistance or various agents for incontinence—the tissue itself is an organ or anatomical site rather than a specific molecular therapeutic target like a protein or enzyme. Pathological conditions associated with urethral tissue include inflammatory urethritis, obstructive strictures, and malignancies.
Urethral tissue is an anatomical structure and does not have a single mechanism of action as a molecular target. Pharmacological agents typically target specific receptors within the tissue, such as alpha-adrenergic receptors or muscarinic receptors.
