URGCP-MRPS24 readthrough refers to a predicted, uncharacterized protein resulting from transcription that extends from the URGCP (upregulator of cell proliferation) gene into the adjacent MRPS24 (mitochondrial ribosomal protein S24) gene. This phenomenon, known as readthrough, sometimes yields fusion transcripts or proteins, but evidence for the existence and function of the actual fusion protein in humans is lacking. The individual gene MRPS24 encodes a well-characterized mitochondrial ribosomal protein S24, which functions in mitochondrial translation and protein synthesis within mitochondria[1][2][4][8]. However, the readthrough product URGCP-MRPS24 does not appear in authoritative lists of drug targets, is unreviewed and predicted in UniProt[9], and has no demonstrated biological function, disease role, or therapeutic relevance.
