Target intelligence / Profile preview
Uric acid is a metabolic end product of purine metabolism in humans. While the kidneys are the primary route for uric acid excretion, the intestine serves as the second most important organ for its elimination from the body. Intestinal uric acid handling involves both direct excretion via specialized transporters and catabolism by gut microbiota. Impaired intestinal excretion of uric acid increases renal burden, potentially exacerbating conditions like hyperuricemia and gout. Enhancing intestinal uric acid elimination is an emerging therapeutic strategy to manage hyperuricemia while minimizing kidney-related side effects such as nephrolithiasis (kidney stones).
