Overview

The uric acid degradation bifunctional protein, commonly known as urate oxidase or uricase, is a key enzyme in the purine catabolic pathway. It catalyzes the oxidation of uric acid to 5-hydroxyisourate, which is further degraded to allantoin—a more water-soluble compound that can be easily excreted from the body. This enzymatic activity is crucial for maintaining low levels of uric acid and preventing its accumulation. In humans loss of the enzyme's activity leads to increased risk for gout and other hyperuricemia-related pathologies, therefore recombinant forms are used as therapeutics.
