Uric Acid Transporter 1 (URAT1)

Target
URAT1
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute Carrier, Organic Anion Transporter (OAT), SLC22 Family
01

Overview

Uric Acid Transporter 1 (URAT1), encoded by the SLC22A12 gene, is a key transporter protein located in the apical membrane of proximal tubule cells in the kidney. It mediates the reabsorption of uric acid from the renal filtrate back into the bloodstream, playing a critical role in maintaining systemic uric acid homeostasis. URAT1 functions as an antiporter, exchanging intracellular organic anions for extracellular urate. Its dysfunction or overactivity contributes to hyperuricemia and gout, making it a validated target for anti-gout therapies. Inhibitors of URAT1 promote urinary excretion of uric acid, lowering serum uric acid levels.
