Uric acid transporter proteins in kidney tubules are a family of membrane transporters expressed predominantly in the renal proximal tubule, and are crucial for the regulation of uric acid (urate) homeostasis in humans. This group includes reabsorptive transporters such as urate anion transporter 1 (URAT1/SLC22A12), glucose transporter 9 (GLUT9/SLC2A9), and organic anion transporter 4 (OAT4/SLC22A11), as well as secretory transporters such as organic anion transporter 1 (OAT1/SLC22A6), OAT3 (SLC22A8), multidrug resistance-associated protein 4 (MRP4/ABCC4), ABCG2, and sodium-dependent phosphate cotransporters (NPT1/SLC17A1, NPT4/SLC17A3). Together, these proteins mediate the balance between urate reabsorption and excretion, determining plasma uric acid concentrations. Dysregulation or genetic variation in these transporters is linked with gout, kidney stones, and other urate-related disorders, and thus specific transporters, especially URAT1 and GLUT9, are considered major therapeutic targets for uricosuric drugs.
