Overview

Uridine-cytidine kinase 1 is a cytoplasmic enzyme that phosphorylates uridine and cytidine to form uridine monophosphate and cytidine monophosphate, using ATP or GTP as phosphate donors. It specifically does not phosphorylate deoxyribonucleosides or purine ribonucleosides, but can modify certain nucleoside analogs, which is important for the activation of some chemotherapeutic agents. UCK1 is expressed broadly across human tissues and is implicated in nucleotide salvage pathways and the metabolism of fluoropyrimidine drugs; alteration in its activity is associated with cancer and drug response.
