Overview

Uridine-cytidine kinase-like 1 (UCKL1) is an enzyme that phosphorylates uridine and cytidine in the pyrimidine salvage pathway, forming uridine monophosphate. UCKL1 plays a critical role in cellular nucleotide metabolism and is upregulated in several cancers, where it supports cell survival and resistance to apoptosis. It interacts with both viral (Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen 3) and immunological (natural killer lytic-associated molecule) partners, and its degradation is associated with increased apoptosis in tumor cells. Its overexpression is observed in hepatocellular carcinoma and may be clinically relevant in oncology as a putative oncoprotein and therapeutic target, although its utility as a biomarker alone is limited.
