Overview

The urinary tract is a multi-organ system comprising the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra, which collectively facilitate the filtration of blood and the excretion of metabolic waste as urine [NIH, 2023]. It serves a critical role in systemic homeostasis by regulating fluid volume, electrolyte balance, and acid-base status [StatPearls, 2023]. While the urinary tract itself is an anatomical system rather than a single molecular target, it contains a variety of specific proteins—such as the SGLT2 transporter in the kidneys or muscarinic receptors in the bladder—that are key therapeutic targets for treating diabetes, hypertension, and overactive bladder [PubMed, 2022]. Pathological conditions of the urinary tract include infections (UTIs), urolithiasis, and various malignancies like renal cell and bladder carcinomas [Mayo Clinic, 2023]. From a pharmacological perspective, the urinary tract is also significant as the primary route for the elimination of many drugs and their metabolites, making it a focal point for studying renal clearance and potential nephrotoxicity [FDA, 2021].
