Overview

The urinary tract mucosa is the innermost lining of the urinary tract, including the bladder, ureters, and parts of the urethra. It serves as a critical barrier between urine and underlying tissues while also playing dynamic sensory and immune roles. It consists of the urothelium, basement membrane, and lamina propria. Its primary functions include barrier protection, sensory detection, and immune defense. Disruption of the mucosal barrier can lead to increased susceptibility to urinary tract infections, overactive bladder symptoms, and chronic inflammation.
