Urine

Overview

Urine is a liquid byproduct of metabolism in humans and many animals, produced in the kidneys through the filtration of blood followed by reabsorption and secretion processes. It serves as the primary vehicle for the excretion of water-soluble waste products, including urea, uric acid, and creatinine, as well as excess electrolytes and toxins. While urine is a critical diagnostic medium used to monitor renal function, systemic metabolic health, and drug elimination, it is not a therapeutic target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. In the context of drug development, urine is analyzed to determine the pharmacokinetic properties of a compound, specifically its renal clearance and excretion profile. Certain conditions, such as proteinuria or glycosuria, are detected via urine analysis and indicate underlying pathologies in the kidneys or metabolic systems. Therefore, while urine is indispensable for clinical monitoring and biomarker discovery, it does not function as a site for pharmacological intervention.
