Urogenital immune system

The urogenital immune system is a specialized branch of the mucosal immune system responsible for protecting the urinary and reproductive tracts from infection and maintaining tissue integrity (Abraham & Miao, 2015, Nature Reviews Immunology). It consists of physical barriers, such as the urothelium, and a diverse population of immune cells including macrophages, neutrophils, and T cells that respond to pathogens like uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) (Nielubowicz & Mobley, 2010, Nature Reviews Urology). This system plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections (UTIs), interstitial cystitis, and various urogenital malignancies where immune evasion or chronic inflammation occurs (Taniguchi & Karin, 2018, Nature Reviews Immunology). Because the urogenital immune system is a broad physiological network rather than a single protein, it does not function as a discrete therapeutic target for drug discovery. Instead, researchers target specific molecular pathways within this system, such as cytokine signaling or immune checkpoints, to modulate the local immune environment (O'Neill et al., 2013, Nature Reviews Drug Discovery). Understanding the unique immunological landscape of the urogenital tract is essential for developing targeted immunotherapies and vaccines for genitourinary diseases.
