Overview

Urokinase-type Plasminogen Activator Receptor (uPAR) is a GPI-anchored cell surface receptor that binds urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), localizing it to the cell surface and facilitating the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin. This process is crucial for extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation during tissue remodeling, wound healing, and cancer metastasis. uPAR interacts with integrins and activates intracellular signaling pathways, regulating proliferation, survival, migration/invasion, and angiogenesis. It is highly expressed in many malignant tumors and elevated suPAR levels are biomarkers for chronic inflammatory diseases.
