UPK3BL1 (Uroplakin-3b-like protein 1) is a human gene and protein annotated as similar to the uroplakin family, which includes proteins forming specialized plaques in the urothelium essential for barrier function in the urinary tract[6][5][2]. Unlike canonical uroplakins (UPK1A, UPK1B, UPK2, UPK3A, UPK3B), UPK3BL1 lacks defined structural features, functional roles, and evidence of involvement in disease or therapy. While it is present in the genome (chromosome 7), UPK3BL1 is not a validated receptor, enzyme, or drug target and should not be conflated with UPK3B, a component of urothelial plaques[2][3]. Reference databases such as NCBI, UniProt/InterPro, and The Human Protein Atlas offer gene/protein-level annotation but do not describe functional or clinical significance for UPK3BL1[6][5][4]. Thus, designation as a therapeutic target is not warranted, and many synonymous names stem from its incomplete characterization.
