Urotensin-II-related peptide (UTS2B)

Target
UTS2B
Molecular classification
Peptide ligand, Neurohormone, Secreted precursor protein
01

Overview

Urotensin-II-related peptide (Urotensin 2B, UTS2B, also known as URP) is a secreted peptide ligand, primarily expressed in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues, where it binds and activates the urotensin-II receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor involved in vasoconstriction, blood pressure regulation and neuroendocrine signaling. While closely related to urotensin-II, UTS2B is encoded by a distinct gene and has overlapping but not identical distribution and regulatory functions. Unlike the receptor (UT, GPR14), UTS2B itself is not a therapeutic target, but rather a ligand for the UT receptor, which is the pharmacological focus of drug development efforts[1][2][3].

Mechanism of action

Acts as an agonist at the Urotensin-II receptor (UT), activating Gq/11 and triggering intracellular calcium mobilization and protein kinase C pathways (for receptor, not the peptide)[1][2]

03

Biological functions

G protein-coupled receptor bindingRegulation of blood pressure[3]Signal transductionPossible involvement in smooth muscle contraction and neuroendocrine signaling[1][2]
04

Disease associations

Cardiovascular diseasePossible roles in hypertension, heart failure, and metabolic syndrome[1][2]
05

Safety considerations

None reported for the peptide itself; modulation of the UT receptor may have concerns related to vascular tone and blood pressure[1]
06

Interacting drugs

None directly; acts as ligand for the Urotensin-II receptor, which is a drug target[1][2]
07

Biomarkers

None established for patient selection or efficacy monitoring
