The urinary tract mucosal surface, specifically the urothelium, is a highly specialized, multilayered epithelial lining found throughout the renal pelvis, ureters, bladder, and proximal urethra. Its primary role is to provide an impermeable barrier to urine and pathogens, protecting underlying tissues from chemical and mechanical injury. The urothelium consists of basal, intermediate, and superficial umbrella cells joined by tight junctions and covered by a protective glycocalyx. It also has sensory and limited transport functions, with ion channels and aquaporins present for selective movement of water and solutes. When breached, the mucosal surface activates immune responses, contributing to inflammation and tissue remodeling. Pathology affecting this surface is implicated in infections, cancer (urothelial carcinoma), and chronic inflammatory diseases of the bladder. This entry is not suitable as a molecular target—use specific proteins such as uroplakins for molecular-level detail.
